A Thanksgiving Message from the Georgia Chamber of Commerce

Wednesday, November 23, 2011

“The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies…It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American People.”

-  President Abraham Lincoln, October 3, 1863

In October 1863, President Abraham Lincoln formally declared the fourth Thursday in November as the annual Thanksgiving holiday for the United States.  His action came at the height of the American Civil War as our nation was torn apart by economic and social differences.   In spite of the obvious sadness and grief that prevailed, Lincoln still found an extensive list of things for America to be thankful for: international peace with other nations, a growth of domestic agriculture and industry, the extension of our boundaries with new settlements, and population growth despite the heavy losses on the battlefield.

As Americans, these last few years have certainly been difficult on our nation.  We have all felt the effects of the economic recession and fighting terrorism domestically and overseas.  Through these trying times, it is encouraging that we as a nation can still join together this Thanksgiving “with one heart and one voice” and acknowledge the things that we are truly grateful for.  Our faith, the love of our family and friends, the privilege of being an American – all sources of what true riches in life really are.  As Georgians we can also be thankful and proud to live in such a wonderful state, and for the people who make it a great place to live and work.

On behalf of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, I wish everyone a happy and safe Thanksgiving holiday.
