Georgia Budget News State agencies were informed last Tuesday that they should be prepared to make significant budget cuts for fiscal year 2012. With the exception of the Department of Education, which has been asked to look at 2 or 4 percent cuts, agencies have been directed to develop budgets that cut 6, 8 and 10 percent for consideration by the Office of Planning and Budget.
This request comes on the heels of an earlier directive to identify 4, 6 and 8 percent cuts for the current fiscal year due to uncertainty regarding federal Medicaid funding support. Relief may arrive for fiscal year 2011, however, as the U.S. Senate approved the funding measure last Thursday and it is expected to receive a positive vote in the U.S. House.
Also, it was announced on Friday that state tax collections for July 2010 were up 4.7% over July 2009. Collections in June were also better than the previous year.
