Senate Passes Massive Health Care Bill The U.S. Senate marked Christmas Eve by passing its 2,457-page version of a bill that would completely transform the American health care system, raise costs and reduce access to care.
The $2.5 trillion package, approved by a 60-39 margin, includes a dozen new taxes and six tax hikes totaling nearly $400 billion to cover a vast expansion of government health coverage and new subsidies for lower to middle-income families to buy insurance. It also prevents private health plans from denying coverage, requires Americans to purchase it and penalizes employers who do not provide it.
Every Democrat voted for the legislation, giving it the minimum number of votes required for passage; every Republican present voted against it. A final bill will now be worked out between the Senate and the House, which passed its version in November.
