Governor Perdue Announces Choice for State School Superintendent
Governor Sonny Perdue announced last Wednesday that he has selected Brad Bryant to serve as interim state school superintendent, filling the vacancy created by current superintendent Kathy Cox, who announced her resignation last month.  Bryant has served on the State Board of Education since 2003 and prior to that was on the DeKalb County School Board for 12 years.  He has also held leadership positions with state and national school board associations.  Bryant has indicated he intends to run for the position as an independent candidate in November should he be able to collect the over 44,000 signatures necessary to do so.  Graves Sworn in as Congressman from GA-9
Tom Graves was sworn in as the newest member of the U.S. House of Representatives last Monday in Washington, D.C.   He will face his runoff opponent, Lee Hawkins, and four other Republican candidates in the primary election on July 20 in a bid to hold the position for a full two-year term. Tax Council Appointees Chosen
Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle has appointed D. E. "Skeeter" McCorkle, president and CEO of McCorkle Nurseries (Dearing), and Bradford Dickson, manager of the tax practice at Tarpley and Underwood (Sandy Springs), to serve on the Special Council for Tax Reform and Fairness for Georgians.  They join Roy Fickling, CEO of Fickling & Co. (Macon), and banking consultant A. D. Frazier (Mineral Bluff), who were appointed by Speaker David Ralston.    Other members of the council are Georgia State economist David Sjoquist, University of Georgia economist Jeffrey Humphreys, Mercer University economist Roger Tutterow, Georgia Chamber Board Chair Suzanne Sitherwood, National Federation of Independent Business Georgia Chair Gerry Harkins, and Governor Sonny Perdue.  Saxby Chambliss on Financial Reform Conference Committee
Georgia Senator Saxby Chambliss is serving on the congressional conference committee that is working to reconcile House and Senate versions of financial reform legislation.  One of the reasons he was selected was his expertise regarding derivatives.  Click here for a recent Wall Street Journal article about this important issue.
