Congressional Perspective: Tom Graves on Referendum A (This copy was submitted by Congressman Tom Graves for Georgia Chamber members) U.S. Congressman Tom Graves has written an Op-Ed on why Georgia Chamber members should support Referendum A on November 2. Referendum A, if approved, will exempt all tangible personal property constituting the inventory of a business. If approved by a majority of the voters, the Act becomes effective on January 1, 2011, and applies to all tax years beginning on or after that date.
Today, Georgia is one of only six states that levy a property tax on business inventories that are still housed in the state at the end of the year. As a result, many companies shift inventories out of state, withhold purchasing, or locate distribution centers outside of Georgia to avoid the tax.
