State Seeks Second Round of Race to the Top Funding

With early education increasingly recognized as critical to students’ long-term academic success, Georgia is seeking a new round of federal Race to the Top grant dollars to enhance its early learning programs. The state won $400 million in Race to the Top funds last year to improve K-12 student achievement through stronger standards and assessments, better teacher quality and other initiatives. The new $70 million proposal being developed by the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning will bring a similar focus to Pre-K and other early education programs. State leaders and Chamber staff recently attended a workshop in Chicago with early education experts to begin planning Georgia’s application. The U.S. Departments of Education and Health & Human Services will award the funds by the end of 2011.
