Volunteers Enjoy Savannah Reward Session on Tuesday, October 21

Savannah Electric President & CEO Anthony James (left), introduces 2003 Georgia Chamber Chair Robert L. Brown, Jr. at the "Reception on the Rooftop" campaign reward session in Savannah.

As if on cue, a giant container ship chugged past the Savannah Electric building during the Team Georgia Chamber 2003 "Reception on the Rooftop," reminding guests of the size of the state’s business community.  The event drew more than 50 campaign volunteers, members, prospective members and Georgia Chamber Board members to hear from Savannah Electric President & CEO Anthony James, Georgia Chamber President & CEO George Israel and 2003 Georgia Chamber Chair Robert L. Brown, Jr.

The event celebrated the success of the statewide membership and resources campaign and enabled non-members to learn more about the Georgia Chamber of Commerce.  A reception that began at 5:00 p.m. lasted until well after 7:00 p.m. as business leaders talked with one another about a variety of issues.

James welcomed the group to his company’s fifth floor balcony, overlooking the Savannah River and congratulated his Savannah Electric campaign team for hitting, and exceeding, their goals for the second consecutive year.  James also commented on his regard for the Georgia Chamber as an effective business advocate, saying, “I feel strongly enough about the job the Georgia Chamber does that we became a Cornerstone member.”

Israel touched on several key issues the Georgia Chamber will work on during the 2004 Georgia Legislative Session, which will begin in January.  He talked about the importance of upping the organization’s membership, which currently stands just above 3,500 companies from across the state.  In particular, Israel thanked the members in attendance the reception.  “Every time we add a new member, it is like adding one decibel to the voice of the business community,” Israel said.  “And to legislators, it means a lot knowing that a sizable group of Georgia voters is concerned with the health of the business environment.”

Brown spoke briefly, thanking Savannah Electric and the whole city for the hospitality he received there.  “I’ve been to Savannah many times and I always leave impressed with the beauty of the city and the warmth of her people,” Brown said.   Brown updated campaign numbers, telling the audience that more than 500 volunteers from across Georgia have combined to produce more than $863,000 while recruiting 403 new members.

The two newest Cornerstone Members, Rabey Electric and Alstom Power are both headquartered in Savannah and were recognized at the event.  Volunteers stuck around until the end for a door prize drawing that included gift baskets, golf umbrellas, a cooler, books, tins full of cookies, a weekend at The Cloister at Sea Island, an overnight stay at the Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel in Atlanta and a pair of AirTran tickets.

Volunteers will next gather at Atlanta Motor Speedway (AMS) on Tuesday, November 4 for a campaign reward session sponsored by AMS, Jackson Beverages and Pathway Communities.  Starting at 5:00 p.m., volunteers will be able to take rides around the track in an official pace car.  A reception begins at 6:00 p.m. in the Media Building.

The Team Georgia Chamber 2003 Victory Celebration will be held at noon on Wednesday, November 12 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Atlanta.
