Alert: House to Vote Thursday on Transportation Funding

It’s been more than a month since the Georgia Senate voted overwhelmingly to approve a plan for new regional funding to help combat a multibillion-dollar shortfall at the Georgia Department of Transportation. Now it’s the lower chamber’s turn.  

On Thursday, the House of Representatives is expected to take up its version of Senate Resolution 845. The measure would let voters across Georgia decide this November whether regions should be allowed to implement a penny sales tax for badly needed transportation projects in their area – projects that otherwise have little to no chance of seeing the light of day thanks to the funding shortfall.

Georgia Chamber Hails State Supreme Court Decision Upholding Expert Witness Language in 2005 Tort Reform Act

Georgia Chamber of Commerce President George Israel applauded today’s decision by the Georgia Supreme Court upholding the expert witness provisions in SB 3 (Tort Reform Act of 2005).  He said it reflected common sense and fairness and was a victory for all Georgians interested in a quality judicial system.

In a 5-2 ruling issued Monday morning, the court declared a lower court’s ruling was “mistaken” when it ruled the state’s expert witness law unconstitutional.  The case was Mason v. Home Depot, S07A1486.

Georgia Chamber, Get Georgia Moving back consensus approach to transportation funding

Business leaders, elected officials and others gathered Thursday to support a consensus plan for new transportation funding that would put voters in every region of Georgia in the driver’s seat.

Charles Tarbutton, chairman of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and co-chairman of Get Georgia Moving, a coalition of more than 50 groups, brought the media up to speed on the consensus approach during a press conference at the state capitol.

Time Short for Solving Key Challenges Facing State, Lt. Gov. Cagle tells Leaders at State Chamber’s Business Day at Capitol

A successful businessman in Hall County, Lt. Gov. Cagle was a member of the Georgia State Senate before his election to the state's second highest office.

More than 200 business leaders from around the state gathered under the shadow of the Gold Dome for breakfast on Wednesday, March 5, to hear Georgia’s Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle present his views on some of the challenges facing the state.

Before introducing the lieutenant governor, Charles Tarbutton, Asst. Vice President, Sandersville Railroad Company and 2008 Chair of the Georgia Chamber, said that the decisions made during the current session of the General Assembly could change the course of our state.  “I think our elected officials know that there’s no more time for debate on these matters.  We are going to see some resolution by sine die and what shape that takes concerns the business community,” Tarbutton said.
